Child Support in Florida

The Basics

Child support in Florida is based on a set formula. To figure it out, you just need to know a few key pieces of information:

What the Court Looks At:

  • How many children you have.
  • How many nights each child spends with each parent during the year.
  • Each parent’s monthly income.
If a parent isn’t working or not earning as much as they could, the court might assign an estimated income (called imputed income) based on what they should be making.
  • Health insurance costs for the child and who pays for it.
  • Daycare costs and which parent is paying.
    (Daycare must be work-related.)

All of this is plugged into a formula and shown on a Child Support Guidelines Worksheet, which becomes part of the court file.

How Is It Paid?

Usually, one parent pays support to the other every month. It can be paid:

Directly to the other parent, or

Taken from the paying parent’s paycheck and sent through the state (Tallahassee), then deposited into the other parent’s bank account.
